32 Ways to Use Facebook for Business Print E-mail

Facebook’s not just for keeping tabs on friends and filling out quizzes — it can also be used as a highly effective business tool. It’s great for marketing your products, landing gigs and connecting with your customers.

Here are 32 ways to use Facebook in your business.

Manage Your Profile

1. Fill out your profile completely to earn trust.

2. Establish a business account if you don’t already have one.

3. Stay out of trouble by reading the Facebook rules regarding business accounts.

4. Install appropriate applications to integrate feeds from your blog and other social media accounts into your Facebook profile. (Although you should be careful before integrating your Twitter feed into your Faceboook profile, as a stream of tweets can seem overwhelming to your contacts.)

5. Keep any personal parts of your profile private through Settings.

6. Create friends lists such as “Work,” “Family” and “Limited Profile” for finer-grained control over your profile privacy.

7. Post a professional or business casual photos of yourself to reinforce your brand.

8. Limit business contacts’ access to personal photos.

9. Post your newsletter subscription information and archives somewhere in your profile.

Connect and share with others

10. Obtain a Facebook vanity URL so that people can find you easily.

11. Add your Facebok URL to your email signature and any marketing collateral (business cards, etc.) so prospects can learn more about you.

12. Post business updates on your wall. Focus on business activities, such as “Working with ABC Company on web site redesign.”

13. Share useful articles and links to presentation and valuable resources that interest customers and prospects on your wall, to establish credibility.

14. Combine Facebook with other social media tools like Twitter. For example, when someone asks question on Twitter, you can respond in detail in a blog post and link to it from Facebook.

15. Before traveling, check contacts locations so you can meet with those in the city where you’re heading.

16. Research prospects before meeting or contacting them.

17. Upload your contacts from your email client to find more connections.

18. Use Find Friends for suggestions of other people you may know to expand your network even further.

19. Look for mutual contacts on your contacts’ friends lists.

20. Find experts in your field and invite them as a guest blogger on your blog or speaker at your event.

21. Market your products by posting discounts and package deals.

22. Share survey or research data to gain credibility.

23. Use Facebook Connect to add social networking features to your web site.

24. Suggest Friends to clients and colleagues — by helping them, you establish trust.

25. Buy Facebook ads to target your exact audience.

26. Read up on Facebook Beacon to see if it might be useful for you.

Use Network, Group and Fan Pages

27. Start a group or fan page for product, brand or business. Unless you or your business is already a household name, a group is usually the better choice.

28. Add basic information to the group or fan page such as links to company site, newsletter subscription information and newsletter archives.

29. Post upcoming events including webinars, conferences and other programs where you or someone from your company will be present.

30. Update your group or fan page on a regular basis with helpful information and answers to questions.

31. Join network, industry and alumni groups related to your business.

32. Use search to find groups and fan pages related to your business by industry, location and career.

Goo.gl Print E-mail

Just What the World Needs: Google Introduces Goo.gl URL Shortener

Maybe it started as a joke, "What the world needs is another URL shortening service!" said as though we didn't have enough already. Then, someone at Google heard the joke, took it seriously, committed $$$, and out popped Goo.gl.

Yes, another URL shortener, just what the world needs! Put another way: What won't Google do to a) put its name on something and b) gather more information about users?

For now, Goo.gl works only with Google applications, where it shortens URLs for Google's Feedburner and from the Google browser toolbar. The service cannot be accessed directly by users from a browser.

Entering the goo.gl address calls up the following:

"Google URL Shortener at goo.gl is a service that takes long URLs and squeezes them into fewer characters to make a link that is easier to share, tweet, or email to friends."

Actually, whether the service really is at goo.gl is hard to say, since there is no public user interface--all we see is a Web page that also states the Mom-and-Apple-Pie goals for the service:

"Stability, ensuring that the service has very good uptime; security, protecting users from malware and phishing pages; and speed, fast resolution of short URLs."

The Google Official Blog post that announced the service Monday afternoon offers a tad more detail.

"People share a lot of links online," wrote Googlers Muthu Muthusrinivasan, Ben D'Angelo, and Devin Mullins. "This is particularly true as microblogging services such as Twitter have grown in popularity.

"If you're not familiar with them, URL shorteners basically squeeze a long URL into fewer characters to make it easier to share with others. With character limits in tweets, status updates and other modes of short form publishing, a shorter URL leaves more room to say what's on your mind - and that's why people use them."

The Google URL Shortener immediately competes with services including TinyURL, Bit.ly, and a host of others. Each generates a unique shortened URL, such as http://bit.ly/5jTKbh when I submitted http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/making-urls-shorter-for-google-toolbar.html (the address for the Google blog post) to the bit.ly service for shortening.

When the user clicks on the shortened URL, the shortening server must resolve the URL, match it to the original and longer URL, and then redirect the browser to that site.

I am not aware of any huge problems with the existing shortening services, but letting Google handle URL shortening for some of its customers' needs probably makes sense.

(Google recently got into the public DNS business as well, another necessary Internet service).

So, while the world doesn't need a new URL shortener, we may someday be happy Google started offering one as the need for such services continues to grow. If nothing else, the goo.gl URLs will be a constant reminder of the company gives us goodies.

BTW--If you are wondering about the domain name: GL is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Greenland, that patch of glaciers (and a little soil) up past Canada on the way to Iceland, which is less icy and more green than Greenland. (The .ly in Bit.ly is the ccTLD for Libya).

Google Buys AdMob for $750 Million Print E-mail

Google Buys AdMob for $750 Million

Google has officially announced that it is taking mobile display advertising provider in exchange for $750 million. This deal completes Google’s mobile ad platform as AdMob’s mobile display joins Google Mobile search ads and SMS.

Here’s what both companies have to say about the acquisition deal:

“Mobile advertising has enormous potential as a marketing medium and while this industry is still in the early stages of development, AdMob has already made exceptional progress in a very short time. AdMob is the quintessential Silicon Valley startup – generating impressive year on year revenue growth – and we’re excited to welcome this talented to Google,” says Susan Wojcicki, VP of Product Management at Google.

While AdMob Founder Omar Hamoui has this to say about the deal:

“We’re proud of the progress we’ve made towards accomplishing this goal, and joining Google will only accelerate this process, ultimately leading to very real benefits for end users around the world. As publishers and developers generate more revenue from their mobile products, they will invest more, and their mobile offerings will become richer, more creative and more robust.”

According to the official info site put up by Google to coincide with their acquisition of AdMob, the deal

  • will bring new innovation and competition to mobile advertising, and will lead to more effective tools for creating, serving, and analyzing emerging mobile ads formats.
  • will benefit developers, publishers, and advertisers by improving the performance of mobile advertising, and will provide users with more free or low-cost mobile apps.
  • will make the mobile ad space remain highly competitive, with more than a dozen mobile ad networks. The deal is similar to mobile advertising acquisitions that AOL, Microsoft, and Yahoo have made in the past two years.

· SEO Budgets for 2010

Hi all

The run in for Xmas 2009 has begun and many businesses are already planning for 2010. We have begun our yearly New Year plan and budget in the hope that we can at least enjoy the recession ridden Xmas of 2009. We have found an upsurge in SEO and in recent weeks we have been contacted by many companies for various countries which quite clearly shows that if your business / website is optimised you do not need to rely on the Irish Market. We are now working for new clients in Canada, USA and Japan. If you need any help on outside markets be sure to contact us.

November brings much anticipated autumn internationals, so at least those dreary Saturdays can be spent yelling loudly at our Rugby team, we also of course have France in the World Cup qualifiers – so hopefully our small but powerful country can do as we always do and punch well above our weight.

One of our new clients is a resort based in Orlando Florida, so if anyone fancies a trip South for Xmas 2009 be sure to logon to www.tuscana.net and speak with Linda or Erica whom I’m sure take care of all their Irish cousins. (More on Tuscana – in the newsletter)

Charity

I have been asked to grow a bear d for a local charity for Xmas, so from December 1st I’m going to have my last shave for 3 weeks. When I arrive on your premise’s looking more like a Folk singer please bare with me until January 1st:

Best wishes for November 2009!

Regards

Padraig

2010 will see tremendous growth online and we are urging all clients to ensure that they budget for SEO. Recent IIA surveys indicate that the SEO budget should be circa 10-20% of turnover depending on the industry. Because we are expected to be in recession until late 2010, there couldn’t be a better time for your business to bring new customers from Ireland and abroad. The internet remember does not have any borders. Feel free to call us on 1890 466 453 to discuss marketing your business into other countries.
